Giving You the Business

As we celebrate our 90th Anniversary this year, we were visited by Eva Mastromatteo from Erie News Now to appear in their popular feature "Giving You the Business".  We were so excited to share a bit of our history and brag about how much our members mean to us!

Eva interviewed our CEO Brian Waugaman who set the scene and stated, “We had 46 original members. They deposited $241 of their own money for the initial deposit.”  Since this humble beginning, the credit union has grown to over 81,000 members with assets exceeding $800 million.  Chris Cortes, our Chief Operations Officer, gave his thoughts on the branch offices and back-office operations with Jon DeMarco, Executive Director of Presque Isle Partnership, adding his thoughts on our community partnership and outreach.  An excellent job Eva and the ErieNewsNow crew!

Thank you all for being a part of our 90th Anniversary Celebrations!

90 Years ATM Screen 0226

This year, Erie Federal Credit Union celebrates its 90th anniversary, marking nine decades of growth since its founding in June 1936. Established at the height of the Great Depression to provide fair credit to educators, the institution began as the Erie School Employees Federal Credit Union with just 46 members and $241 in deposits. Its first office was a modest space on the second floor of the Public Library at 27 South Park Row, shared with the Erie School District.

Old Erie FCU

Over the last 90 years, Erie FCU has evolved from these humble roots into Northwestern Pennsylvania’s largest credit union, offering a comprehensive suite of modern financial services for individuals and businesses. Despite this expansion, the credit union remains a member-owned, not-for-profit cooperative dedicated to the "people helping people" philosophy. By returning profits to its members through superior rates and lower fees, Erie FCU continues to honor its legacy of service and community-focused banking.

Erie Federal Credit Union remains deeply rooted in the Erie and Crawford County communities, actively giving back through a variety of targeted initiatives. Their commitment is demonstrated through the #TeamAOK (Acts of Kindness) volunteer program, which sees employees donating thousands of hours annually to local organizations. Furthermore, Erie FCU provides free financial literacy resources, including webinars and credit counseling, empowering members to achieve "financial peace of mind". The credit union also engages in ongoing community support efforts, such as combating local food insecurity through the recent "Give Hope – Feed the Need" holiday campaign, which has distributed thousands of dollars to area organizations in need.

Erie FCU’s commitment goes far beyond banking. Whether it's helping a family through a tough financial time, guiding a couple to finding their dream home or partnering with a local nonprofit to expand impact, they believe in doing what they can to make life better for their members and the community.

As Erie FCU celebrates its 90-year milestone, the credit union serves over 80,000 members with assets exceeding $805 million.

We are honored to be your credit union and remain unwavering in our commitment to the values and principles that have guided us through these past decades. Our commitment to our members and the communities we serve is defined in our mission statement - To responsibly deliver financial solutions that serve the needs of our community.
