Erie Chapter of Credit Unions Presents $8,250 in Scholarship Awards

The Erie Chapter of Credit Unions is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2009 James J. DeDad Scholarships. Six scholarship winners were chosen from 140 entries.

The winners include:

Applicants were asked to write a 500-word essay on the following topic: “How can social media (MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, etc.) help you in making educated financial decisions? And what are the drawbacks to using social media in this process?”

The awards will be presented at the Erie Maennerchor Club on Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. This year 11 credit unions from the Erie area participated in the scholarship program. The scholarships are named in memory of James J. DeDad, former president of the Erie Chapter of Credit Unions. Since 1995, the scholarship program has awarded a total of $107,000.00.

Youth Ambassador Competition

The competition is open to credit union members who will be between the ages of 17 and 25, as of December 31, 2009. There are no educational requirements to compete and you do not have to be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student. Awards at the credit union level are $100 for First Place and $50 for Second Place. The applicant will be required to write and present an essay of 500 words or less on a pre-selected topic. The Erie FCU winner will compete at the Erie Chapter Youth Ambassador Contest in October 2009. Awards at the Chapter level are $500 for First Place, $100 for Second Place and $50 for Third Place. The winner at the Erie Chapter level will compete at the PA Credit Union Association Convention in May 2010.
